About XUANJI
XUANJI is a working toolkit for classical Chinese divination — I Ching, BaZi, name analysis and Tarot — built on primary sources rather than recycled listicles.
Why we built it
Most "I Ching" sites on the web give you sixty-four Wikipedia summaries and a GPT paragraph that starts with "The I Ching suggests that…" That's not divination, that's a horoscope with extra steps.
We wanted the actual mechanics: the eight palaces (八宫) and their element attributions, the Najia (纳甲) stem-branch assignment on each line, the Six Relatives (六亲), the ruling line and the world/response lines (世应). The parts that make a reading mean something specific about your question.
So we implemented them. Not described them — implemented them, as running code you can test against any text you own.
What's underneath
- Eight Palaces (八宫卦序) — the Jing Fang 京房 sequencing, with generation, element and world/response line for all sixty-four hexagrams, verified line by line.
- Najia (纳甲) — stem-branch and Six Relative assignment computed per hexagram, not copied from a table image.
- BaZi (八字) — four pillars from true solar time, with month boundaries switched on the solar terms (节气), not on the lunar calendar. Most free calculators get this wrong for anyone born in the first half of a month.
- Five Grids naming (五格) — stroke counts taken from the Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典), which is the standard the classical method requires. Modern stroke counts differ: 泓 is 8 strokes today and 9 in Kangxi. Every number changes downstream.
- Hexagram text — Wilhelm/Baynes standard English names, so what you read here matches the book on your shelf.
Who runs this
XUANJI is run by a small independent team. We're not a wellness brand and we don't employ influencers. We build the tool, we use it, and we charge for it so it can keep running.
We also run a developer tools directory in the same spirit: useful, unglamorous, maintained.
What we won't do
- We won't claim to predict your future with certainty. The I Ching is a discipline for thinking clearly about a situation, not a lottery number generator.
- We won't sell your data. Full stop.
- We won't hide the method behind a paywall and then feed you random text. The paid tiers unlock volume and history, not the quality of the reading itself.
