Reading the I Ching for money

Pick the right subject

In six-line (liuyao) reading, every question resolves to one reference line called the use spirit (用神, yong shen). For money it is always the wife/wealth line (妻财, qi cai) — the element the diviner controls.

Income, investment, business revenue, collecting a debt, a sale: all of these read off the wealth line. If the wealth line is absent from the hexagram, look for a hidden line — the wealth still exists but is buried under something. If there is no wealth line and no hidden one, the thing you are asking about has not taken shape yet.

This is where most beginners go wrong: they read the whole hexagram as a mood. A hexagram is a structure. Find the wealth line first, then read everything else in relation to it.

Is the money strong or weak?

Strength is calculated from the calendar, not from feeling. Two references matter: the month branch (月建) carries the season, the day branch (日辰) carries the present moment.

- Wealth line supported by the month or day → strong. The opportunity is real.
- Wealth line clashed by the month, controlled by the day → weak. It looks like money but it is thin.
- Wealth line moving → it is arriving, or changing form, soon.
- Wealth line still → the money exists, but nothing is pulling it toward you yet.

A strong, moving wealth line is the clearest "yes, and quickly" signal in the whole system.

Can you actually carry it?

This is the step almost everyone skips. The self line (世爻, shi yao) is you. Wealth strength means nothing without comparing it to your own capacity.

- Strong wealth, strong self → you get it, and it stays.
- Strong wealth, weak self → the money arrives and becomes a burden: debt, obligation, exhaustion, or a job that pays well and costs you everything.
- Weak wealth, strong self → you have the capability but this particular deal is too thin to be worth it.

Reading money without reading the self line is how people end up confidently taking on a contract that ruins them.

What blocks it: the sibling line

The sibling line (兄弟, xiong di) controls wealth — it drains the same resource the wealth line sits on. So a moving sibling line is the classic signature of:

- money split with someone else,
- a competitor taking the deal,
- unexpected expenses eating the gain,
- a partner who costs more than they bring.

Sibling strong and moving while wealth is present → the money exists, you just do not get all of it. Sibling still and weak → no interference worth worrying about.

When the question is about a partnership or a rival instead of money, the sibling line becomes the subject itself. Same star, opposite meaning.

Emptiness and binding

Two modifiers change everything:

Emptiness (旬空, xun kong) — the line falls in the current ten-day void. Wealth that is empty is money that has not landed: approved but unpaid, promised but unsigned. It usually resolves when the void is filled or broken. An empty wealth line is not a "no", it is a "not yet".

Binding (合, he) — the wealth line is tied to another line. Money that is bound is money in use elsewhere: capital tied up, funds frozen, a payment routed through someone who is sitting on it. It does not move until something breaks the tie.

When: the timing rules

Timing (应期) is the most over-claimed part of this system. Treat it as a window, not a date.

- Wealth strong and moving → now, or within the current ten-day cycle.
- Wealth empty → the day the void is filled or clashed.
- Wealth bound → the day the binding is broken.
- Wealth clashed by the day → it comes fast and may leave fast.

Anyone who gives you an exact date from a hexagram is selling certainty the method cannot produce. A window you can plan around is worth more than a day you can bet on.

Frequently asked

Which line means money?

The wife/wealth line (妻财), every time. It is defined by the five-element relation, not by the word "money" appearing anywhere.

Does a strong wealth line mean I will get rich?

No. It means this specific opportunity is substantial. Whether it reaches you depends on the self line, the sibling line, and whether it is empty or bound.

Can the I Ching tell me how much I will earn?

It can tell you whether a deal is heavy or thin relative to you. It does not produce amounts, and any reading that does is inventing numbers.
