Reading the I Ching for relationships

The question decides the line
Relationship readings fail more often at the question than at the hexagram. "Does he love me?" cannot be verified, so the hexagram's answer cannot be checked either — you will simply accept whichever reading matches what you already hope.
Reframe into something checkable:
- "What should I watch for in this relationship over the next three months?"
- "How does this relationship develop if nothing changes?"
- "Should I keep investing effort here?"
Now the reading has something to be wrong about.
Traditional assignment by gender
The classical rule: a man asking about a woman reads the wealth line, a woman asking about a man reads the officer/ghost line (官鬼, guan gui).
This comes from a social model where the wealth line represents the wife and the officer line represents the husband. For same-sex questions, or questions where the roles do not fit, assign explicitly: whichever person is the one being pursued or cared for takes the corresponding role, and the other takes the self line. What matters is that the assignment is fixed before you look at the result — not adjusted afterward to fit it.
Self and Other: reading the pair
The self line (世) is you. The other line (应, ying) is them. Their relationship is the relationship:
- Self and Other generate each other → mutual interest, ease, things move.
- Self and Other control each other → one dominates, friction, uneven effort.
- Self and Other clash → on-off, distance, outside interference, repeated separations.
- Self and Other combine → sticky, both sides invested in maintaining it.
Two still lines that generate each other is the most stable configuration in the system. A clashing pair that keeps re-forming is the most common one in the real world.
Strength and movement of the partner line
Beyond the pair, read the partner's line on its own:
- Strong → the person is present, available, in a real position to act.
- Weak → willing but unable, or not really in the picture.
- Moving → something is changing on their side.
- Empty → a specific and useful signal: they are not there. Physically absent, emotionally elsewhere, or the relationship exists mostly in your head.
Emptiness in a relationship reading should be read plainly, not softened.
Third parties and obstruction
A moving sibling line controlling the wealth line (in a man's reading) is the standard marker of a rival or third party. Multiple officer lines appearing in a woman's reading often means more than one candidate, or a partner who is already attached elsewhere.
The self line being bound so that it cannot move is the signature of being held in place: staying because leaving is complicated, not because staying is right.
Will it work out — and what that answer is worth
Favorable: self and Other generating each other, partner line strong and full, no clashes or controlling relations. Unfavorable: clashing pair, empty and weak partner line, self line bound.
An unfavorable reading is not a verdict on the relationship. It is a description of the structure you are operating inside. People do stay in structurally unfavorable relationships and make them work by changing the structure — usually by changing what they themselves are doing. The hexagram does not decide. You still do.
Frequently asked
Which line represents my partner?
The wealth line if you are a man asking about a woman, the officer line if you are a woman asking about a man. For other configurations, assign explicitly and commit before reading.
What does an empty partner line mean?
That the person is not present in the situation — absent, unavailable, or the connection is not reciprocal to the degree you assume.
Can the I Ching tell me if we will get married?
It can describe whether the structure favors it and what stands in the way. Treat any specific yes/no-someday claim as entertainment, not information.
