Reading the I Ching for a lost object

Why these readings are worth doing
Lost-object questions are the best possible test of any divination method, because they resolve. Either the thing turns up where the reading said, or it does not — usually within a few days. There is no room to reinterpret afterward.
That makes them useful in two directions: they sometimes help you find the object, and they always tell you something about how much weight to give the method.
The object is the wealth line
The wealth line (妻财) stands for the object:
- Strong → the object is intact and still recoverable.
- Weak or controlled → damaged, or already disposed of.
- Empty → frequently means it is not actually lost — it is somewhere you have not looked — or it has been taken.
- Absent with no hidden line → usually gone for good.
The empty reading is the one to take seriously: before concluding anything was stolen, empty often just means "you have not checked the obvious place."
Near or far: inner versus outer trigram
This is the single most reliable rule in lost-object reading. The hexagram splits into a lower trigram (lines 1–3) and an upper trigram (lines 4–6).
- Wealth line in the lower trigram → the object is close: in your home, on you, in the room you were in.
- Wealth line in the upper trigram → the object is away: outside, in transit, at someone else's place, in another town.
If you read nothing else from a lost-object hexagram, read this.
Has it moved?
A still wealth line → the object has not been moved and is where it was left. A moving wealth line → it has been shifted, picked up, or is changing location. Movement into strength → it is getting further. Movement into weakness or emptiness → it has moved and its location is now unclear.
Direction
Direction comes from the branch attached to the wealth line:
- 子 (zi) → due north; 午 (wu) → due south; 卯 (mao) → due east; 酉 (you) → due west.
- 寅卯 east, 巳午 south, 申酉 west, 亥子 north.
- 辰戌丑未 → earth: centre, corners, ground level, inside containers, under things.
Combine direction with the trigram rule: lower trigram plus a corner branch puts you searching the bottom shelf in the room you were in, not across town.
When
Wealth line strong and not empty → soon, same day or within three days. Wealth line bound → only when the binding is broken, which usually means something else has to happen first before you think to look again. Wealth line empty → when the void fills. Wealth line clashed → it has moved on, and the odds drop.
If the reading says it is close, still, and intact, go look before you read the next paragraph.
Frequently asked
Which line represents the lost item?
The wealth line (妻财). Its strength tells you whether the object is intact and recoverable.
How do I know if it is near or far?
Lower trigram (lines 1–3) means near; upper trigram (lines 4–6) means away. This is the most dependable rule in this type of reading.
What does an empty wealth line mean for a lost object?
Usually that it is not really lost — it is somewhere you have not checked — or that it has been taken. Check the obvious places first.
